wonderful.
Healdsburg
Name: Acre
Location: Center Street
Type of food: Vegan, Vegetarian, Regular Fare
Price Range: Moderate ($6.00 appetizer, $15.00-$18.00 entree)
Review: Great Wine List (of course, this is Sonoma County!)
Wonderful meals. I've had grilled tofu on a bed of spinach w/sauce that
was to die for - also their portobello mushroom was yummy. My
recommendation is to call a day in advance (or around 2-3pm) if vegan,
just to make sure the chef can adapt many of the food items - especially
the delicious specials. My hubby had the chicken dish and said it was
supurb.
Atmosphere is casual ->slightly dressy. Excellent/knowledgable wait
staff too. The town of Healdsburg has a pop. of 10,000 and is a nice
place to come if you're in San Francisco.

Name: The Wheel of Life
Type of food: Thai and Chinese
Price Range:Reasonable. The most expensive dishes on the menu are 8.50
Review:This restaurant is entirely Vegan. Most of the dishes are made with meat
substitutes made of wheat gluten and soy protein, so you can get 'chicken',
'fish', 'beef', 'pork', and even 'shrimp'. What made me blink was seeing
the BBQ 'ribs'. If you aren't into substitutes or are allergic to wheat,
there are also plain vegetable and tofu vegetable dishes available. I love
this restaurant because I missed spicy orange sauce terribly and was never
able to make an entirely satisfactory replacement at home.

Name: Orean The Health Express
Location: 817 N. Lake
Type of food: Burgers, Pizzas, Burritos, Salads, etc.
Price Range: Student Special (Less than $5 per meal)
Review: Really good vegan fast food take out! They have something for practically
everyone. They offer everything from chili cheeseburgers, chiken burgers, air-fried
french fries, burritos, tamales, tacos, and salads. They also offer a variety of
drinks with spirulina such as shakes and slushes. My favorite food combo is the
chicken burger with some air-fried french fries and a stawberry spirulina slush!
Orean's is approved by the American Heart Association and they use no beef, pork,
chicken, fish, eggs, milk, or refined sugar. They also use non-dairy cheese and
organic clover sprouts.

Name: Jyoti-Bihanga
Location: 3351 Adams Ave. San Diego, California (in Normal Heights)
Type of food: Ovo-lacto vegetarian, vegan friendly
Price Range: Most expensive item: $9.45, I typically spend $10-$15
Review: This restaurant offers mostly American vegetarian food, and some Asian as
well. My recommendation: The curry or the portabello mushroom burger. Meat
eaters seem to prefer the tofu BBQ burger or the Brahma Burrito. They also
offer Now and Zen vegan deserts. Brunch is offered on weekends. If you go in
April or August, call ahead as Jyoti-Bihanga closes for one week in either
month.

Type of food: Mexican Food that can be made Vegetarian and Vegan
Price Range: Cheap! Mainly about $2.50-$4.00, Most expensive thing on the menu is
probably $6.
Review: Terrific place. Very tasty foods, Lots of Vegan and Vegetarian choices.
The people there are very receptive to comments and although service can be a
little slow at times, it's well worth the wait for such flavorful large
portions. Things to look for: Vegan Tofu tostada, Tofu Burrito, Vegetarian
Chorizo.......Not everything is Vege, so meat eaters will be glad to come
along.

San Jose
Name: White Lotus
Location: Market Street
Type of food: Vietnamese
Price Range: approx. $10 per person
Review: This is my happy place. The menu is almost entirely vegan. The items are listed as
beef curry and spicy pork, but they are all made with meat substitutes. They use everything:
tofu, tempeh, seitan, TVP... The only drawback is that some of their chicken items contain
eggwhites. However, there are so many items on this menu, no vegan could be disappointed!
My recommendations are as follows:
Appetizer - Combo Spring & Summer Rolls
Entree - Deluxe Stuffed Tofu Curried Beef
Upland
Name: Bakers
Type of food: Fast Food
Price Range: approx. $10 per person
Review: A fast-food chain and it's gotta be one of the most
vegan-friendly chains around (I believe it's owned by Seventh Day
Adventists). There is even a combination meal on the menu, a la McDonalds,
of a Boca Burger, fries and drink. They offer rice and bean tacos and more.
They're great! And they're building one just a few blocks away from us.
